In the past, most computers came with a Hard Disk Drive (HDD), which was cheaper and offered larger storage space. However, with advancements in technology, Solid State Drives (SSDs) have become more affordable and are now widely used in new computers, offering better performance and smaller size. As a result, many users are now looking to upgrade their old HDDs to newer, faster SSDs.
One big concern for users is how to transfer data from an old HDD to a new SSD without reinstalling the Windows system. Fortunately, you can clone the HDD to the SSD using a third-party clone tool, such as Qiling Disk Copy, to prevent the need for a full OS reinstallation. This approach allows you to simply swap the new SSD into your computer and have it boot normally, preserving your existing setup and data.
Qiling Disk Copy is a user-friendly software that allows users to clone their hard disk drives to a larger or more advanced drive without losing data, making it a handy tool for upgrading their hard disk drives.
To clone a hard disk on Windows 11, download Qiling Disk Copy and follow the detailed guide. Note that Windows 11 requires a GPT partition style, so initialize your new SSD to GPT or convert the SSD from MBR to GPT first.
Step 1: Download, install and run Qiling Disk Copy on your PC.
Step 2: By clicking on the head of the disk, select the HDD that you want to clone.
Step 3: Select the SSD as your destination.
Step 4: Edit the disk layout and then click "Proceed" to continue.
To ensure the destination is an SSD, you should select the "Check the option if the target is SSD" checkbox.
Step 5: Wait for the process to complete.
A warning message informs you that the data on the SSD will be erased. If you don't have important data on the destination disk, click "OK" to proceed.
After cloning is complete, unplug the old HDD and connect the new SSD. Restart the computer, which will automatically boot from the new SSD. If keeping the old HDD, change the boot order in the BIOS setting, choosing the new SSD as the boot drive. Restart again.
Disk cloning is the simplest and safest way to replace an old HDD with a new SSD, as it doesn't result in data loss and eliminates the need to reinstall the OS. This process also serves as a backup of your entire system, providing a safeguard in case of system crashes or booting issues, especially if you have a spare external hard disk on hand.
