Why Is System Restore Disabled in Windows 10?

A greyed-out System Restore control usually means System Protection is off, the selected drive is not eligible, or an administrator has restricted it. It does not mean your personal files are protected elsewhere. Diagnose the setting before relying on it.

Check the correct Windows control

Step 1. Sign in with an administrator account. Search for Create a restore point and open the System Protection tab. Select the Windows system drive (usually C:), not an external data drive. The Protection column shows whether it is On or Off.

Step 2. Select Configure, choose Turn on system protection, and reserve enough disk space with the slider. Click Apply. This Apply button belongs to Windows System Properties, not Qiling Disk Master.

Step 3. Back on the System Protection tab, select Create, give the point a meaningful name, and wait for Windows to finish. Open System Restore and confirm the point appears. If the Create option remains disabled, check free space and whether the PC is managed by an organization.

If the setting remains unavailable

On a work or school PC, ask IT whether a policy disables System Protection. On a personal PC, check that the Windows volume is online and has free space, then restart and try again. Do not delete shadow copies or edit the registry based on an unverified web command: that can remove remaining recovery options. Windows 10 standard support ended in October 2025, so also plan a supported-OS migration.

Add a separate Qiling System Backup

Qiling cannot switch on Windows restore points. A system image is a different protection layer and needs a destination separate from the Windows disk.

Step 1. Connect an external drive or reachable network share. In Qiling Disk Master open Backup and Recovery > System Backup. Verify the Windows partitions selected as the source.

Choose System Backup in Qiling Disk Master

Step 2. Choose the backup destination on the external drive or share. Confirm available space and avoid saving only to another partition of the same physical disk.

Select a separate destination for the system image

Step 3. Review the task, click Proceed, wait for completion, and verify that the image appears at the destination. Create recovery media separately if you will need to restore when Windows cannot boot.

Start and monitor the Qiling system backup

Conclusion

Enable System Protection on the Windows drive and confirm a test restore point. Keep a separate backup because restore points are not copies of your documents or a replacement for a full system image.
