How to Clone a 128GB SSD to a 256GB SSD

A 256GB SSD gives more room than a 128GB SSD, but cloning alone does not guarantee that C: will expand automatically. Prepare the disk, copy the complete boot layout, and inspect unallocated space afterward.

Before cloning: fit and capacity

Check whether the old drive is 2.5-inch SATA or M.2 SATA/NVMe, then choose the corresponding replacement and external enclosure. The target should be at least as large as the source's partition layout. Back up important files separately and save the BitLocker recovery key. If the 128GB disk is almost full, remove disposable files only after verifying the backup.

Clone the complete Windows disk

A Windows disk typically includes a small EFI or System Reserved partition, C:, and sometimes recovery partitions. Selecting only C: may leave the new SSD unbootable. Identify disks by model and actual capacity, not by drive letter: letters can change when drives are attached externally. The destination's existing contents will be erased.

Use the added space and test

For the first boot, disconnect the old SSD if practical and select the new Windows Boot Manager in firmware. Check Disk Management: the extra space may remain unallocated after the copied partitions. Extend C: only when the free space is adjacent; if a recovery partition lies between them, plan a supported partition move after another backup. Verify several restarts and application data before reusing the source.

Clone the Disk with Qiling Disk Master

Use whole-disk clone so the new 256GB SSD receives Windows and its boot partitions.

Step 1. Connect the 256GB SSD through the correct SATA or NVMe adapter. In Qiling Disk Master, open Tools and utilities > Disk/Partition clone. Select the entire 128GB source disk row on the following screen.

Step 2. Select the old Windows drive as source by model and capacity, then click Next. Include the complete disk. The screenshot uses a sample data disk, not a Windows example.

Step 3. Select the new SSD as destination and click Next. Double-check its identity because cloning overwrites its contents.

Step 4. Review all partitions and available space. Enable SSD optimization when offered, click Proceed, and accept the explicit destination-overwrite warning.

Step 5. When the copy finishes, shut down and install the SSD internally. Boot from its Windows Boot Manager with the old system disk detached where practical, then verify files, applications, and capacity.

Keep the old disk unchanged until the new SSD boots repeatedly. If a partition blocks expansion, inspect the layout before moving or deleting anything.

Conclusion

The important checks are interface compatibility, complete boot partition copying, and a verified first boot. Expand C: only after inspecting the cloned layout.
