Extend Volume Greyed Out in Windows Server 2016

On Windows Server 2016, Extend Volume is often greyed out because unallocated space is not directly to the right of the target partition.

Case B. Another Partition Blocks the Unallocated Space

Step 2. Use Resize/Move on the blocking partition and move it to the right side of the disk, so the unallocated space becomes directly adjacent to the target volume.

• Open Disk Management and confirm the target volume shows the new size.
• Check key services, shared folders, and applications that use the extended volume.
• Review Event Viewer and your backup software to make sure no disk or VSS error appears after resizing.
