Hard Drive Keeps Losing Disk Space

Users of our website may recall a popular post titled "hard drive shows wrong capacity" that helped many people reclaim full capacity of an HDD, USB flash drive or SD card. The article identified three main reasons for this issue: a hidden recovery partition, computer virus, and invisible unallocated space. However, hard drive disk space issues persist and are a concern for many. This post will discuss another similar issue: computer hard drive keeps losing space. A user shares their story.

Workable Solutions Step-by-step Troubleshooting
One. Virus and Malware Infection Step 1. You can run the anti-Install anti-virus software on your computer to scan and remove the virus, and ensure it's updated regularly to protect against new threats. This will help prevent the virus from causing further damage and allow you to safely remove it from your system. You can also run a full system scan to detect and eliminate any hidden malware. Additionally, consider creating a backup of your important files to prevent data loss in case the virus causes any irreparable damage.Full steps

Losing Space on My C: Drive

"I'm constantly losing space on my C: hard drive. It's for win10 with 50 GB around, and the free space decreases very rapidly without installing new programs or saving new files to it. The free space displays itself as 12.6 GB this morning, and later 8.3 GB, 6.1 GB... But this moment it's almost full with only 1.2 GB left! Why does the hard drive keep losing disk space for no reason?"

You're likely frustrated if your hard drive partition is losing unused space at a rate of several gigabytes per day. It's essential to investigate the underlying reasons and implement the correct solutions to prevent this issue, rather than letting it continue unchecked.

Reasons & Solutions to Hard Drive Losing Space Rapidly

The sudden loss of hard drive free space can be a frustrating experience, but identifying the causes is often straightforward. However, it's essential to follow any suggested solutions carefully to avoid potentially damaging your drive.

One. Virus and Malware Infection

If you've installed suspicious programs from unknown websites or opened unknown attachment files in emails recently, be cautious. It's likely that a virus has infected your system, consuming your hard drive space.

Step 1. Run anti-virus software on your computer to scan and remove the virus for the first attempt.
Step 2. If virus removal software doesn't work, you can try using the command line (cmd) to remove the virus from your hard drive. This should be done with caution and only if you're comfortable with the process.
Step 3. A system restore is a more effective way to remove a virus, as it returns your system to a previous point in time when it was virus-free, without altering any of your personal files. Formatting the hard drive, on the other hand, completely wipes all data, including your personal files, which may not be desirable. Therefore, a system restore is the last yet most powerful way to remove a virus.

Warning
Formatting the hard drive and using system restore can potentially eliminate a stubborn virus, but it will also erase all data on the drive. It's recommended to back up important data before attempting these measures, as they can cause the drive to quickly run out of free space.

Two. System Protection

To check if System Restore is turned on in Windows 10, go to the "Control Panel" -> "System and Security" -> "System" -> "System protection" and click on "System protection" to open "System Properties", where you can see the "Protection Settings".

The Protection feature is usually set to 'On' for the System drive, which causes the hard drive to lose free space rapidly. This is because the feature creates and stores regular computer system files and settings in restore points, resulting in large files that consume space.

To disable System protection, you can either directly set the Protection to 'No' or take the two other steps.

To fix the issue of your hard drive losing space, you can download Qiling CleanGenius on your computer, which is also widely used as a disk cleanup utility. This software allows you to clean up system junk files, clean large files, and optimize a disk, all of which can help efficiently free up space on your hard drive.

Step 1. Download and install Qiling Partition Master Suite.

Step 2. Click PC Cleaner and install Qiling CleanGinus. Then, click "Cleanup" and click "Scan" to start cleaning up the system and make your PC as good as new.

Step 3. The software scans your computer to identify large, unnecessary files and system junk, allowing you to select and delete them with a single click.

Step 4.When the scan is complete, click "Done" to finish cleaning system junk files.

Step 2. After freeing up disk space, consider enabling system protection again to utilize its benefits for future system restore and repair, while also reducing its disk space usage.

reduce system restore disk space usage in system protection settings

This method can help save at least 10 GB disk space on the target drive by deleting all restore points for this drive. It's a simple and effective way to free up space.

Three. Hard Drive Malfunctions

The hard drive has been working for a while, but it's a cheap secondhand drive, which might be the cause of the issue. The hard drive itself might be malfunctioning, leading to errors and bad sectors that prevent data from being stored correctly. This can result in a rapid decrease in free space without any warning.

Step 1. To check the file system on a partition in Open Qiling Partition Master, locate the disk, right-click the partition you want to check, and choose "Advanced" > "Check File System".

Step 2. In the Check File System window, select the "Fix the error on the disk" option and click "Proceed".

Step 3. The software will start checking your partition file system on your disk. Once it completes, click "Finish".

If too many bad sectors are found instead of 0 errors, it's time to follow this guide to fix bad sectors.
