How to Recover a Deleted Revit Model (.rvt)

Updated on Oct 20, 2026 | by Qiling

Quick Navigation:

A Revit model may be a local file or part of a workshared central model. The correct restoration path depends on that distinction and on where backups are stored.

Check Model Type and Backups

For a non-workshared local model, check neighboring numbered .rvt backups. For a workshared model, involve the BIM administrator and use central-model or managed repository backups.

Record the model path, save date and whether other team members still have valid local copies. Avoid replacing the central model with an untested file.

Numbered .rvt files beside a non-workshared model are previous saved versions, not necessarily the latest model. A workshared central model has a different backup and coordination process, so identify the model type before testing or restoring copies.

Revit links can point to other models or CAD files. A recovered RVT that opens with missing links may still contain its own geometry; validate the linked sources and model version before considering it complete or promoting it to a shared central file.

Protect the Original Drive

Close Revit on the affected PC and stop writes to the source disk. Copy surviving model and backup files to another drive.

Prepare a separate destination for recovery. If the file is on a network server, request its snapshots rather than scanning a mapped drive from this PC.

Recover With Qiling Deep Data Recovery

Qiling Deep Data Recovery provides a visual scan of storage that Windows can detect. In this case, scan only a stable locally attached disk that held the missing RVT, not an inaccessible central server. A listed file is only a candidate until you open and verify its recovered copy.

Step 1. Inspect Revit Backups

Compare numbered .rvt backups or managed central versions and test a copy before scanning.

Step 2. Choose a Deleted-File Scan

Use Fast Scan for a local deleted model or Recycle Bin Scan after an emptied bin. Disk Scan fits a lost local partition.

Choose scan for local Revit model

Step 3. Select the Model Disk

Match the physical disk that stored the local RVT by model and capacity. Do not scan a mapped network shortcut.

Select Revit model disk

Step 4. Compare RVT Candidates

Filter by .rvt and compare model names, sizes and save dates. Keep the latest usable backup as well.

Review RVT backup candidates

Step 5. Recover and Validate a Copy

Save to another disk, open a detached or duplicate model as appropriate, and verify views, families and linked files with the team.

Save model to separate storage

Verify the Recovered Project

Coordinate any central-file replacement with the BIM administrator. A model that opens locally may not be safe to publish as the new central copy.

Preserve linked CAD and other external references alongside the validated model.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are numbered RVT files beside my model?

They can be local backup versions created by Revit; test a copy before scanning.

Can I scan a Revit server from a mapped drive?

Use server or repository backups first. This product scans locally readable storage.

Should I overwrite the central model immediately?

No. Validate a separate copy and coordinate with the project administrator.

If the missing item is a separate loadable family rather than the RVT project, use Revit RFA Family Files Recovery. Check family types and parameters, and whether a surviving project still contains the loaded family.
