Transfer Windows from an Old SSD to a New SSD

Replacing an SSD can add capacity or change the interface, but the migration must also carry the Windows boot partitions. Copying the visible C: files is not enough.

Transfer Windows from an Old SSD to a New SSD

Check the SSDs

  1. Confirm the new SSD fits a supported slot or enclosure. SATA and NVMe drives use different protocols.
  2. Compare used data with the new SSD's capacity and save the BitLocker recovery key.
  3. Back up irreplaceable files separately and identify the current boot disk in Disk Management.
  4. Connect the new SSD and confirm it is detected; do not initialize or erase the wrong drive.

Choose the transfer method

For a working installation and compatible hardware, clone the complete system disk. A new PC may need a fresh installation because of different drivers and licensing. A system image restore is another option if you have recovery media and a verified image.

Clone the Disk with Qiling Disk Master

Choose the existing SSD as the source and the new SSD as the destination. On the preview screen, check boot partitions before clicking Proceed.

Step 1. Connect the new destination drive. In Qiling Disk Master open Tools and utilities and choose Disk/Partition clone. For a Windows boot-drive replacement, select the whole disk rather than just C:.

Step 2. Select the original disk as the source. Confirm its model, size, and partition map, including any boot and recovery partitions. Click Next.

Step 3. Select the replacement drive as the destination by model and capacity, then click Next. All data already on that destination can be overwritten.

Step 4. Review the direction and partition layout. Check that required partitions fit on the destination; enable Optimize for SSD if it is an SSD and the option is available. The illustrated preview shows the controls; check the full layout on your own PC.

Step 5. Click Proceed. Confirm the overwrite warning only after verifying the destination. Keep both drives connected while the progress screen runs; after completion, boot-test the new drive before erasing the original.

Switch boot drives

  1. Wait for the clone to finish, shut down, and install the new SSD internally if it was connected through USB.
  2. For the first start, disconnect or temporarily disable the old SSD if possible. Select the new Windows Boot Manager in firmware.
  3. Verify Windows starts, encryption unlocks, and applications and files are present.
  4. Expand a volume if the new SSD has extra unallocated space and the layout permits it.

If the new SSD does not boot

Check firmware detection, UEFI mode, boot order, and whether all system partitions were included. Preserve the old SSD while troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clone SATA to NVMe? Yes when the PC supports booting from the NVMe drive and the layout is compatible.

Can I erase the old SSD immediately? Keep it intact until the new installation has booted and passed file checks.

Conclusion

A complete system clone and a successful first boot are separate milestones. Keep the original SSD intact until the new drive proves reliable.
