Recover Deleted Camtasia TREC Recordings on Windows

Updated on Oct 29, 2026 | by Qiling

Quick Navigation:

TREC is a Camtasia recording source, distinct from the TSCPROJ edit file. Check Camtasia recording folders, project packages and backups before scanning the deleted capture.

Find a Working Copy

Identify the last saved location and confirm whether the missing item is a project, an exported result, or source media. Check the application backup or autosave area, Recycle Bin, version history, and other devices before scanning. If the project still exists but will not open, make a copy and investigate corruption separately; an undelete scan does not repair a damaged file.

Large captures can be overwritten or truncated. Stop recording to the same drive and save recovery results elsewhere.

Protect the Original Storage

Record the drive and folder that held the missing Camtasia recording (.trec). Stop saving new recordings, renders, downloads, or project versions to that physical disk. New writes can overwrite deleted data; SSD TRIM may clear deleted blocks. Have another physical disk ready for the recovery output.

If the device reports hardware errors, disconnects repeatedly, or makes unusual noises, avoid repeated scans and consider professional help. A scanner cannot recover work that was never saved, nor can it search cloud-only content in a remote account. Use the relevant app or cloud recovery option first.

Scan with Qiling Deep Data Recovery

Qiling Deep Data Recovery searches Windows-visible local storage for deleted files. It cannot guarantee a complete project if referenced media or plug-ins are missing. Use the mode that matches what happened to the storage.

Step 1. Select the Scan Mode

Open the program. Choose Fast Scan for recent deletion from a local disk, Recycle Bin Scan if the bin was emptied, USB/SD Scan for removable storage, or Format Scan after an accidental format. Do not choose a mode solely from the file extension.

Choose Qiling scan mode for Camtasia recording (.trec)

Step 2. Select the Source

Choose the disk or partition that contained the project or recording. Match its drive letter and capacity, especially if several external drives are attached. Keep the destination disk separate.

Step 3. Review Candidate Files

After the scan, search by project name and extension when available. Compare folders, dates, sizes, and related media. Keep multiple plausible versions. If the first scan misses the file and the device is healthy, try the deeper scan option.

Step 4. Recover to a Different Physical Disk

Select the candidates, click Recover, and save them to the prepared drive. Never write the output back onto the source. Keep an untouched copy and test another copy in the relevant application.

Verify the Recovered Work

Import a copy into a compatible Camtasia version and check picture, system audio, microphone audio and total duration.

If the result opens but is incomplete, compare other scan candidates and earlier backups before editing it. A plausible filename or preview does not prove the whole project survived. Once verified, back up the project and any required media together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a TSCPROJ contain my TREC video?

It may reference the recording; check the media files separately.

What if the recording imports but ends early?

Treat it as incomplete and compare another candidate or backup.

Where should recovered files be saved?

Use a different physical disk to avoid overwriting deleted data on the original storage.
