How to Recover Files After Emptying Recycle Bin

Updated on Oct 17, 2026 | by Qiling

Quick Navigation:

Emptying Recycle Bin removes its restore option, but it does not necessarily erase every file block immediately. Stop using the drive that held the files and check for a backup before attempting a scan.

Where the Deleted Files May Still Exist

If File History was enabled, open the former folder and inspect Previous Versions. OneDrive or another cloud service may have its own separate recycle bin, but its contents and retention depend on the account and service settings.

Files removed from an external USB or SD card may never have entered the Windows Recycle Bin. In that case, scan the removable device itself rather than treating this as a bin-only problem.

Before You Scan

Avoid downloads, installations, and large writes to the disk that contained the emptied bin. Prepare another physical drive for output so the recovery process does not reuse the deleted space.

Write down the deleted file names, types, and approximate folder. If the PC has more than one internal drive, identify the original disk by capacity before selecting it.

Use Recycle Bin Scan

Qiling Deep Data Recovery provides the scan modes shown below. The mode in Step 2 is chosen for this specific loss scenario; it does not change the need for a separate recovery destination.

Step 1. Check Backups and Set Up Output

Search File History and cloud deleted-items folders. If no copy is available, connect a separate disk and install Deep Data Recovery away from the original disk.

Step 2. Choose Recycle Bin Scan

On the mode screen, select Recycle Bin Scan. This mode is intended for files removed from the Windows bin; use USB/SD Scan for a deleted file on removable media instead.

Step 3. Confirm the Windows Disk

If the software asks for a location, choose the Windows volume that originally held the files. Use drive size and layout to avoid scanning the output disk.

Step 4. Inspect Results and Deep Scan

Find the former file type or name and preview likely matches. If the first results miss the file, use Deep Scan in the results view, understanding that names may be lost.

Step 5. Restore to Another Drive

Select the candidate files, click Recover, and save them to the separate drive. Test the saved copies before clearing any other storage.

What an Empty Result Means

An empty bin scan can mean the wrong source disk was selected, the space was reused, or the file was never in this bin. Recheck the original location and any other account or backup.

On an SSD, TRIM can remove deleted data quickly. A longer scan cannot reconstruct blocks that are no longer available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just undo Empty Recycle Bin?

There is no dependable Undo for an emptied bin. Check backups, then scan the original storage as soon as practical.

Will a USB drive's deleted files appear in the PC bin?

Often they do not. Scan the USB device itself and save any recovered files to another drive.
