How to Find and Recover Missing Pictures in Windows 11

Updated on Oct 18, 2026 | by Qiling

Quick Navigation:

Pictures may appear missing after OneDrive changes, account switching, or a camera import to another path. Confirm where the full-size images were stored before treating them as deleted.

Locate the Full-Size Images

Search This PC by photo date and JPG, PNG or camera RAW extension. Check Pictures, OneDrive Pictures, other user profiles, and any camera-import folder on another drive.

A thumbnail shown by Photos or File Explorer is not always the original image. If the photos are cloud-only, use the cloud account's recycle bin rather than a local disk scan.

Preserve the Photo Source

Inspect Recycle Bin, File History, cloud deleted items, and camera media for intact copies. Copy available originals to a separate device.

Stop new photo imports and editing exports to the affected physical disk. Prepare enough free space on another disk for full-resolution recovery.

Scan for Missing Local Photos

Qiling Deep Data Recovery provides a visual scan of storage that Windows can detect. In this case, select the drive that last held the full-resolution images, not merely a photo-library thumbnail cache. A listed file is only a candidate until you open and verify its recovered copy.

Step 1. Search Every Known Photo Path

Check local and synced Pictures folders, camera card, backups, and the account used for import. Record the original disk.

Step 2. Choose the Appropriate Mode

Use Fast Scan for recent local deletion or Recycle Bin Scan after the bin was emptied. Choose USB/SD Scan if the missing originals are on a memory card.

Choose photo recovery mode

Step 3. Select the Photo Source

Identify the original disk by capacity and label. Avoid scanning the clean output device or an unrelated photo cache.

Select disk with original photos

Step 4. Preview Candidate Images

Filter JPG, PNG, and the camera's RAW type. Inspect images beyond thumbnails where supported.

Step 5. Recover and Check Resolution

Click Recover and save to another disk. Open a sample at full size and compare dimensions with expected originals.

Save recovered images elsewhere

Organize Verified Originals

Keep recovered images and cloud versions in separate folders until you compare dates and resolution. A downloaded thumbnail can look similar but contain far less detail.

Set a clear import destination and a separate backup for future camera transfers. Do not rely on a single library index to prove storage is safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Photos app thumbnails restore the originals?

Not reliably. Find the full-size files or a cloud or camera copy.

Why is OneDrive Pictures different from local Pictures?

Sync settings can move or duplicate the apparent folder. Check both paths and account identity.

Should I import the camera card again now?

First copy or recover the existing originals. New writes to the card or disk can reduce recovery options.
