An external drive may show as RAW, ask to be formatted, or open with empty folders after file-system damage. That is different from a drive with physical failure. If it clicks, disconnects, or disappears from Disk Management, stop repeated reads and consider a professional recovery service. For a stable but unreadable volume, recover the files before attempting repairs.
Cancel any format prompt and avoid CHKDSK until important data has been copied. Write down the drive's capacity, model, and error message. If it still opens intermittently, copy the most valuable readable files to another disk first. Use a different cable and USB port to rule out a connection problem, but avoid repeated power cycles on a failing disk.
Connect a healthy destination with enough free space. Qiling can scan logical file loss on a disk Windows can still identify; it cannot make a physically unreadable disk readable.
Step 1. Open Qiling Deep Data Recovery and choose Disk Scan for an inaccessible or lost partition. If only a few files were deleted from a healthy volume, use Fast Scan instead.

Step 2. Select the affected disk by size, verify that it is not your destination disk, and start scanning.

Step 3. Filter the results and preview priority files. A directory entry without a usable preview does not guarantee a successful recovery.

Step 4. Recover selected files to another physical drive. Check a sample of saved documents, photos, and archives before changing the damaged disk.

Once an independent copy is verified, test the drive's health. A healthy disk with a logical file-system error may be repaired or reformatted for reuse; a drive with growing errors should be replaced. See the broader corrupted-drive recovery guide for more symptoms.
