Back Up Before the Windows 11 26H2 Update

Windows 11 version 26H2 is rolling out to eligible PCs. Before accepting the update, decide what you would need if Windows failed to start afterward. A copy of personal files helps with missing documents; a separate system image can restore the previous installation, applications, and boot partitions.

What to save before 26H2

Copy work files, photos, downloads, browser exports, and files stored outside the usual user folders. Save the BitLocker recovery key somewhere you can access without this PC. If you have cloud-only files, make sure you have an offline copy of anything essential.

Windows settings backup and File History are useful for supported settings or personal files, but neither should be mistaken for a complete, independently restorable image of Windows and installed desktop programs. Use a separate physical drive or reliable network location for that image.

Create the system image in Qiling Disk Master

Qiling Disk Master combines system, disk, partition, and file backup. The following workflow protects the Windows installation before the 26H2 change. Check that the destination has enough free space; the image must not live only on the disk you are protecting.

Step 1. Connect the backup drive, open Backup and Recovery, and select System backup.

Step 2. Confirm that the shown source is your Windows disk and includes its required boot partitions. If you also have important files on a separate data disk, protect that disk or its folders in a separate task.

Step 3. Open the destination browser and choose the external drive or network share. Compare the required space with the available space before proceeding.

Step 4. Review the source, destination, and task name. Click Proceed and wait until the progress screen reports completion. Do not unplug the drive while the image is being written.

Verify recovery readiness before you update

Find the completed image on the destination and confirm it can be selected for recovery. Prepare rescue media and test that the PC can start it and see the backup drive; you do not need to run a restore just to confirm visibility. Keep the BitLocker key and recovery media separate from the PC.

Microsoft reports that some File History backups stopped updating after a September 2026 update; it says the issue was resolved by later updates. If File History is part of your plan, check its last successful backup rather than assuming that a connected drive means the job ran.

After installing 26H2

Confirm Windows starts, your files are present, applications open, and backup jobs resume. Keep the pre-update image until you have verified the new installation. If the update fails, diagnose the boot or update problem first; restore the old image only when you have confirmed the correct source image and target disk.
