Why I Cannot Extend C Drive with Unallocated Space?

Here's the thing: the Extend Volume option is greyed out when I try to extend my C drive. Why can't I extend the C drive with unallocated space? Tried a few 3rd party software, but none of them can help. Really needs some help here. Thanks in advance!

There are two most possible reasons why you cannot extend C drive with unallocated space. Firstly, the unallocated space may not be contiguous, which means it's not next to the C drive.

  • The unallocated space is not adjacent to the C drive;
  • Disk Management does not support operations to extend FAT, exFAT, and EXT partitions.

To address partition management issues, you can utilize the Qiling Disk Master Professional software, which overcomes Windows limitations and enables effortless partition management.

You can use Qiling Disk Master to extend the C drive by utilizing unallocated space across partitions. This tool is not limited to C drive extensions, as it can also extend FAT or other formatted partitions. To do this, follow the guide provided by Qiling Disk Master.

Step 1. Open Qiling Disk Master, select C drive, and choose "Resize/Move."

Step 2. To extend the C drive with unallocated space, drag the partition panel to extend the C drive with unallocated space, regardless of its current location. Once you've done that, click "Proceed" to initiate the process.

To extend the C drive from another disk, you can use a disk management tool to add the unallocated space from the other disk to the C drive. This process involves selecting the C drive and the unallocated space from the other disk, and then using the tool to merge the two into a single, larger drive.

Step 1. In Open Qiling Disk Master, right-click the C drive and select "Advanced" > "Extend with 2nd Disk" to expand the disk space.

Step 2. In the next window, hit "Customize Plan" to continue.

Step 3. Then, choose a customize extension plan and click "Next."

Step 4. Configure the extended partition for the C drive to be at the end of a certain partition, then click "Proceed."

If you're experiencing issues with your C drive, consider using Disk Management to resolve them. However, if your C drive is FAT32, converting it to NTFS using Disk Management may result in data loss. In this case, it's recommended to use a professional third-party tool to avoid data loss.
