SSD Not Showing Full Capacity in Windows: Fix It

When an SSD shows less space than expected, the drive is not always defective. Windows may be reading an old partition layout, showing hidden recovery space, or leaving part of the SSD as unallocated space.

Why the SSD Capacity Looks Wrong

• The SSD has unallocated space that has not been added to a partition.
• A recovery partition sits between C drive and the free space.
• The disk is initialized as MBR, so Windows cannot use space beyond 2TB.
• The SSD was cloned from a smaller drive and kept the old partition size.

Check the SSD in Windows First

1. Right-click Start and open Disk Management.
2. Find the SSD and check whether the missing space is marked as Unallocated.
3. If the free space is next to the target partition, right-click it and choose Extend Volume.
4. If the SSD is larger than 2TB and uses MBR, back up files before converting the disk to GPT.
5. If Windows asks to initialize or format a drive with data, cancel the prompt and recover files first.
