The message 'You need to format the disk before you can use it' is not a recovery instruction. It means Windows cannot open the current volume normally. If the data matters, cancel the prompt and investigate before making changes.
A damaged file system, interrupted transfer, incompatible format, or hardware fault can all lead to this prompt. A drive that works on a different computer may have a compatibility issue rather than deleted files.
Check the cable, port, and power supply for desktop models. Use Disk Management to see whether Windows detects the correct disk capacity. Do not initialize, format, or assign a new file system just to dismiss the dialog.
Avoid repeatedly reconnecting a drive that clicks or drops offline. Such symptoms can indicate physical failure; a long software scan may make the situation worse.
If the disk stays detected, prepare a different physical disk for recovered output. Do not save an image or recovered files onto the external drive that is asking to be formatted.
Qiling Deep Data Recovery provides the scan modes shown below. The mode in Step 2 is chosen for this specific loss scenario; it does not change the need for a separate recovery destination.
Dismiss the format dialog, check the external drive's capacity in Disk Management, and connect a separate output disk. Install Deep Data Recovery on the healthy PC drive.
For an external hard disk that was not intentionally formatted, select Disk Scan. If you know the drive was formatted already, use Format Scan instead.
On the location screen, select the affected external disk by capacity. Make sure it is stable and distinct from the output disk, then start Scan.
Filter the results to the most valuable file types and preview several samples. Use Deep Scan only if the disk remains stable and the initial pass is incomplete.
Click Recover for the needed files and select the separate destination. Verify the copies before attempting repair or reformatting.
Once data is secure, you can investigate file-system repair or replace the drive. If the original disk continues to show errors, do not rely on it as a backup destination.
A format prompt cannot by itself tell you whether the failure is logical or physical. If the capacity is wrong or the disk disconnects, stop software attempts and seek hardware diagnostics.
Not before protecting the data. Formatting changes the volume and may reduce recovery options.
It can solve connection faults, but it will not repair a damaged file system. Verify the drive after changing the cable.
