A PSD is more than a flattened image: layers, masks, and smart objects may matter. Recovering a file with the right extension is only the first step; you must open and inspect its structure.
Check the project folder, Recycle Bin, cloud history, and any Photoshop recovery location that applies to your setup. A file that was never saved may not exist as a complete PSD on disk.
If a flattened export still exists, it may preserve the appearance but not editable layers. Keep it as a reference while searching for the original project.
Stop saving new large Photoshop projects or scratch data to the source disk. These writes can reuse space from a deleted PSD.
Prepare a separate destination with enough free space for large project files. Note the former PSD filename and approximate size.
Qiling Deep Data Recovery provides a visual scan of storage that Windows can detect. In this case, the scan should target the disk that held the saved layered project, not merely an exported image. A listed file is only a candidate until you open and verify its recovered copy.
Look in the project folder, Recycle Bin, Photoshop's available recovery state, and backups. Copy intact exports to another disk.
Use Fast Scan for a recently deleted PSD on a local disk or Recycle Bin Scan after emptying the bin. Use USB/SD Scan if the project was on removable media.
Identify the disk by capacity and label. Avoid installing or saving to that source while scanning.
Filter for .psd and compare sizes and names. Preview support may be limited; a thumbnail does not prove layers are intact.
Click Recover, save to another physical disk, and open a copy. Inspect key layers, masks, and linked assets before relying on it.
Do not overwrite a layered version with a flattened export. Keep both until you have checked which edits survived.
If a recovered PSD will not open, compare other candidates and backups. Renaming a JPG to .psd cannot recreate its layers.
No. Open the full project in Photoshop and inspect layers and masks.
No. It preserves pixels, not the original PSD layer structure.
Check Photoshop's own recovery state and backups; disk scanning cannot guarantee a never-saved project.
