Samsung, a well-known hard disk manufacturer, has seen its market share of Solid-State Disks (SSDs) grow with increasing popularity. As a result, more people are opting to upgrade their devices themselves, prompting Samsung to release its own disk cloning software, Samsung Data Migration.
Samsung Data Migration is a tool that helps users quickly and safely transfer all their data from an existing hard disk to a Samsung Solid-State Drive (SSD). The process is also known as disk cloning, and it's a way to migrate data from one storage device to a larger one, in this case, a Samsung SSD.
The ability to clone an SSD successfully has nothing to do with its size, as you can clone to a smaller or larger one, as long as the target SSD has enough space to accommodate the used space of the source SSD.
If you have two Samsung SSDs and want to clone them, you can use the Samsung Magician software, which is a free tool provided by Samsung. It allows you to clone one Samsung SSD to another, ensuring that the new drive is an exact copy of the original. This process is straightforward and doesn't require any technical expertise, making it accessible to users who are not familiar with disk cloning. The software will automatically detect the source and target drives and guide you through the cloning process.
Samsung Data Migration only supports cloning Samsung SSDs, and does not recognize disks from other brands. It is suitable for users with two Samsung SSDs, both of which are certified models.
To upgrade your Samsung SSD, download and install Samsung Data Migration from the official website, then follow the guide to clone your current SSD to a larger one.
Step 1. To transfer data from an old Samsung SSD to a new one, start the Samsung Data Migration tool, which can be found in the Samsung Magician software. Once the tool is running, connect the target SSD, which is the new SSD you want to transfer data to, to your computer.
Step 2. Select the target SSD and the volume(s) that you wish to clone, which can be up to three volumes, to proceed with the cloning process.
Step 3. Click the Start button to start the cloning process.
If you have two Samsung SSDs, you can use Samsung Data Migration to clone them. However, if you have one Samsung SSD and one SSD from another brand, you'll need to use a different software. Qiling Disk Copy is a good option, as it supports cloning between different brands and has fewer limitations than Samsung Data Migration. With Qiling Disk Copy, you can clone your SSD regardless of the brand, and the process is easy to follow.
Step 1: To start the disk/partition close process, go to the "Tools and utilities" page and select the "Disk/partition close" option.
Step 2: Choose the smaller hard drive as the source disk.
Step 3: Select the larger hard drive to save the data, and then click "Next".
Step 4: Edit the disk layout and then click "Proceed" to continue.
Step 5: A warning message will appear stating that the data on the destination disk will be overwritten. If you don't have any important data on the destination disk, click "OK" to continue.
Step 6: Wait for the process to complete.
When cloning a Samsung SSD, you may face two situations: cloning between two Samsung SSDs and cloning between a Samsung SSD and a different brand. For the former, Samsung Data Migration is a suitable choice, while for the latter, Qiling Disk Copy is a better option.
