Steps to fix Windows 10 install stuck at checking for updates issue
Step 1. Stop windows update service
- To open Command Prompt as an administrator, go to Start, then click on All Programs, then Accessories, right-click on Command Prompt, and select "Run as administrator" from the context menu.
- Type net stop wuauserv to stop windows update service.
- The Windows Update service was stopped successfully, and you shouldn't close the Command Prompt window yet as you'll need it later.
Step 2. Delete two folders
To update Windows, go to the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder, delete all files in the "DataStore" and "Download" folders, and then restart your computer. This will clear the cache and allow Windows to redownload any necessary updates.
Step 3. Start windows update service
To start the Windows Update service, simply type "net start wuauserv" in the Command prompt window.
After completing the three steps, restart your computer and attempt to install the new Windows 10 update. The install process should now complete quickly and progress to the "Ready to install" stage, allowing you to successfully install the update.
