The BIOS, or Basic Input Output System, is pre-installed software on your computer's motherboard that's loaded first when it starts up. It's a familiar term if you've changed your computer's boot order, and is essentially the first piece of software that interacts with your computer's hardware.

Is BIOS Update Necessary?

For most individual users, there is no need to update the BIOS in most cases because you can barely feel anything after the update, and improper updates would cause additional problems. Then when should you update the BIOS? Basically, if you meet one of the following three situations, you will need to update the BIOS.

Most BIOS updates are related to security patches, which can help protect your privacy and prevent data breaches, making your personal information safer. By updating your BIOS, you can safeguard your data and prevent security breaches like Meltdown. Your data and information are valuable, and updating your BIOS can help keep them secure.

The motherboard requires regular fixes for certain bugs, while the CPU and chipset may need microcode and update respectively to address specific issues.

The motherboard needs to be able to handle higher frequency DIMMs or support CPU refreshes in order to keep up with the increasing demands of modern computing. This is crucial for maintaining system performance and ensuring that the computer can handle complex tasks and applications.

How to Update Your Computer's BIOS

There are two main ways to update BIOS: one is done through the BIOS interface before the OS boots, and the other uses a BIOS flash utility provided by the motherboard manufacturer. Motherboard manufacturers have simplified the process, making it accessible even to those new to updating BIOS.

Preparation:

Check the manufacturer's website for your BIOS version and motherboard model, and see if there's a BIOS update available for download.

Step 1. To update the BIOS, download the BIOS update file to an empty USB flash drive, ensuring the USB's file system is set to FAT32.

Step 2. To set up a USB drive as a boot device, follow these steps: Connect the USB drive to your computer, then reboot the computer and press the key (usually F2, F10, F12, or DEL) to enter the BIOS settings. In the BIOS settings, navigate to the boot order menu and move the USB drive to the top of the list. Save the changes and exit the BIOS settings.

Step 3. To update the BIOS, navigate to the BIOS page, select the BIOS update option, and follow the specific instructions for your motherboard, as different motherboards may have varying BIOS options.

During the updating process, do not interrupt the process, either by powering off or pressing the reset button.

Is it Safe to Update BIOS?

Updating the BIOS is generally safe if done correctly, but it's not necessary for individual users unless there's a specific reason to do so. If the update file is downloaded correctly and the steps to update the BIOS are followed correctly, it's safe to proceed.

Making a backup, including both file and system backup, is a wise choice before performing any system updates or changes, such as updating the BIOS or upgrading the system, to ensure safety and prevent potential data loss.

There are many ways to backup files, but unfortunately, there isn't a reliable method to back up the entire system.

Making a system backup protects your C drive and the boot partition, safeguarding all program files, configuration files, and App data on your computer. To do this, you'll need a large enough external drive and the free software Qiling Backup, which can help you create a reliable backup of your system.

Download the software from the button below and see how it can help you backup and protect your system with its user-friendly features.

Step 1. Launch Qiling Backup and choose "System Backup" on the home page to start back up.
