Windows 11 Focus Assist: How to Silence Notifications

Focus Assist is the Windows feature that hides notifications so you can work without pop-ups pulling your attention away. In Windows 11 the same idea appears under two related names: Do not disturb is the simple on-off switch that silences banners and sounds, while Focus adds a timer and can hide the taskbar badges and flashing at the same time. Together they replace the older Focus Assist name you may remember from Windows 10.

This guide explains where the controls live, how to turn Do not disturb on manually or automatically, which notifications are still allowed through, and what to do when the switch appears greyed out or notifications keep leaking through.

What Focus Assist and Do Not Disturb Do

Notifications in Windows 11 arrive as banners in the bottom-right corner, play a sound, add a badge to the taskbar icon, and sometimes flash the app button. During a presentation, a game, or a long writing session, each of those interruptions breaks concentration. Do not disturb turns most of them off in one click.

There are two layers to understand:

The name "Focus Assist" still appears in older help articles and in some third-party tools, but in current Windows 11 settings you are looking for Do not disturb and Focus.

Turn On Do Not Disturb Manually

The fastest way is from the quick settings panel, which is also where you control Wi-Fi, volume, and brightness.

Step 1. Click the network, sound, or battery icon in the bottom-right corner of the taskbar to open quick settings.

Step 2. Click the Do not disturb tile. If the tile is not visible, click the pencil (edit) icon, add Do not disturb from the list, and save.

Step 3. The tile highlights to show it is active. Notifications now go to the notification centre silently until you turn it off.

Step 4. To manage it in more detail, right-click the tile and choose Go to settings, or open Settings > System > Notifications and use the toggle at the top.

Note
You can also open the notification centre by clicking the date and time in the taskbar, then use the Do not disturb switch at the top of the panel.

Set Automatic Rules

Manual control is fine for a meeting, but the real value of Focus Assist is letting Windows switch it on by itself. The automatic rules are found in Settings > System > Notifications, under the section that lists when Do not disturb turns on automatically.

Step 1. Open Settings > System > Notifications and scroll to Turn on do not disturb automatically.

Step 2. Tick the rules that match your routine. The available options typically include:

Step 3. For the time-based rule, click the arrow on the right to set the exact hours and repeat days.

Step 4. Close Settings. The rule applies immediately, and Windows shows a small notification when it switches Do not disturb on so you know notifications are being held.

Choose Which Notifications Still Appear

Do not disturb does not have to block everything. Windows lets you decide which apps and contacts are important enough to break through, so you do not miss an urgent message while still muting the noise.

Step 1. In Settings > System > Notifications, make sure Do not disturb is selected and look for the list of allowed notifications.

Step 2. Click Notifications from apps and other senders to control each app individually. Turning an app off here stops its banners even when Do not disturb is off, so use this for apps you never want to hear from.

Step 3. Under Do not disturb, choose whether alarms and reminders should still play. Most people keep alarms on so a morning timer is not silenced by accident.

Step 4. If you rely on a messaging app for urgent work, leave that app's notifications on and let Do not disturb mute everything else. The message still lands in the notification centre for later review.

Use Focus Sessions With a Timer

Focus sessions combine Do not disturb with a countdown timer, which is helpful for study blocks, writing, or any task where you want to measure the time you spend without interruption.

Step 1. Open the Clock app from the Start menu. If it is not installed, you can get it from the Microsoft Store.

Step 2. On the Focus sessions tab, set the session length. The default is 30 minutes, but you can choose any value and optionally add breaks.

Step 3. Click Start focus session. Windows turns on Do not disturb, starts the timer, and can link to a Spotify playlist if you have the app installed.

Step 4. When the timer ends, Do not disturb turns off automatically and the session is recorded so you can track how much focused time you completed.

You can also start a shorter focus session from quick settings without opening the Clock app: click the Focus tile and pick a duration.

Fix Common Problems

Most issues with Focus Assist come down to a rule you forgot about, or an app that is allowed to override the silent mode.

Notifications still appear even though Do not disturb is on.

Step 1. Check whether the app is listed as an allowed sender. Some apps mark their notifications as high priority, and Windows may surface them unless you turn the app off entirely.

Step 2. Open the notification centre and look for the banner that slipped through. Click the three dots on it and choose Turn off all notifications for this app to silence it completely.

The Do not disturb toggle is greyed out.

Step 1. This usually means a group policy or a work account is controlling notifications. If the PC is managed by your employer, contact your IT team.

Step 2. On a personal PC, check that you are signed in with an administrator account and that no third-party notification manager is installed.

Focus Assist turns on by itself at the wrong time.

Step 1. Go to Settings > System > Notifications > Turn on do not disturb automatically and review each ticked rule.

Step 2. The "during these times" rule uses a 24-hour clock and the days you selected; a small slip here is the most common cause of unexpected silent periods.

FAQs About Focus Assist on Windows 11

Is Focus Assist the same as Do Not Disturb?

Yes, in practice. Focus Assist was the Windows 10 name; Windows 11 renamed the toggle to Do not disturb and added the Focus session feature. The goal is the same: hide non-essential notifications.

Will alarms still ring when Do Not Disturb is on?

By default yes. You can change this in the Do not disturb settings if you want alarms silenced too.

Can I allow specific apps to break through?

Yes. Go to Settings > System > Notifications and manage each app under "Notifications from apps and other senders". Apps you leave on will still show banners even during Do not disturb.

How do I turn off all notifications permanently?

Turn off the main "Notifications" toggle at the top of Settings > System > Notifications. This disables banners for every app, not just during silent periods.

Does Focus Assist affect games?

It can help by suppressing banners that would otherwise cover the screen. Enable the "when I'm playing a game" automatic rule so it switches on without you having to remember.

Back Up Windows Before You Change Settings

Focus Assist is a safe setting to change, but if you are also adjusting power plans, services, or display options while you tidy up your PC, it is wise to create a restore point first. Qiling Disk Master makes a full system image you can roll back to if anything goes wrong.

Part 1: Create a Full System Backup

Step 1. Install and open Qiling Disk Master. On the home screen, open "Backup and Recovery" and choose "System Backup". This option automatically includes Windows and the hidden boot partitions, so you do not have to select them one by one.

Step 2. Check the source. The disk where Windows is installed and its system partitions are already ticked for you. If you only need your personal documents, run a separate "File Backup" task instead.

Step 3. Click the destination box and choose where the image should be saved. Use an external HDD or SSD, a NAS, or any drive other than the one Windows is installed on, and make sure it has enough free space.

select an external drive as the system backup destination

Step 4. Review the task summary and click "Proceed". Wait until the progress bar reaches 100%. Do not unplug the drive or turn off the PC while the backup is running.

click Proceed to start the system backup

Part 2: Restore Windows from the Backup

Step 1. Open Qiling Disk Master again, go to "Backup and Recovery", and select the recovery option. Your backup images are listed, so pick the one you created before the changes began.

Step 2. Choose the target disk or partition. Normally you restore to the original system disk. If the drive was replaced, select the new disk instead, and the restore rebuilds Windows together with its boot partitions.

Step 3. Preview the restore plan, click "Proceed", and confirm the warning. The PC restarts to finish the job, and Windows comes back exactly as it was on the day the image was created, with your files and programs intact.

Note
Keep the backup image on a separate drive, and refresh it before you make broad changes to power, display, or notification settings.

Conclusion

Focus Assist in Windows 11 is now called Do not disturb, and it is the simplest way to silence notifications while you work, present, or play. Turn it on from quick settings with one click, or set automatic rules so it activates during set hours, in full-screen apps, or during games. If you want a timed block of silent work, use a Focus session in the Clock app. Remember that alarms and chosen apps can still break through, and that notifications you miss are waiting in the notification centre when you are ready.
