How to Make C Drive Bigger Windows 7/10| Assigning More Space to C Drive

To make C drive bigger, you can either add more space to C drive by deleting unnecessary files or extending the volume of C drive if there is unallocated space next to it, or by merging a redundant partition with C drive if the redundant partition is adjacent to C drive. This can help free up space on C drive, improve computer performance, and prevent C drive from running out of space.

The native Windows program, Windows Disk Management, allows for the possibility of assigning more space to the C drive, but its complex interface can be bypassed with the use of a third-party partition manager software, such as Qiling Partition Master, which can accomplish the task more easily and quickly.

How Qiling Partition Master Makes Your C Drive Bigger

Unlike Windows Disk Management, Qiling Partition Master has no limitations on moving space from other drives to the C drive, providing more flexibility in disk management.

01

Resize/Move Partition:

To free up space on your computer, you can shrink the D drive to create unallocated space, and then extend the C drive to utilize that newly created space. This process involves using the built-in Disk Management tool in Windows to resize the drives.

02

Allocate Space to C Drive:

Choose any drive among D, E, or F and allocate free space to C drive.

03

Merge Two Partitions:

To combine the C drive with the neighboring D drive into a single larger C drive, you would need to use the built-in Disk Management tool in Windows. This process involves deleting the D drive and then expanding the C drive to occupy the space previously used by the D drive.

04

Merge Non-adjacent Partitions:

Combine C drive with non-To combine one larger C drive, you can clone the existing C drive to an external drive (E, F, or G), then remove the original C drive and replace it with the cloned one. This process involves using a cloning software, such as Acronis True Image or Qiling Backup, to create an exact copy of the C drive on the external drive.

How to Make C Drive Bigger in Windows 7/8/10 Disk Management

On Windows computers, you can use the Disk Management program to resize a partition. To access it, right-click "My Computer" in Windows 7 or "This PC" in Windows 10 and select "Manage", then click on "Disk Management" under "Storage" on the left side of the opened window.

To add space to the C drive, you need to delete a partition or extend the partition itself, but in Disk Management, the extend volume option is greyed out if there's no unallocated space available on the drive. This means you can't simply add space to the C drive using Disk Management. However, you can use the built-in DiskPart command to extend the partition and add space to the C drive. To do this, open Command Prompt as an administrator, type "DiskPart", and press Enter. Then, type "list disk", "select disk 0", "list partition", "select partition 1", and finally, "extend". This will extend the C drive partition and add space to it.

extend volume is greyed out

To enable the "Extend Volume" function in Disk Management, delete the D drive to create unallocated space next to the C drive, allowing you to extend the volume.

Step 1. To free up space on your D drive, right-click on it and select the option to delete the volume, which will convert it to unallocated space.

Step 2. Right-click C drive and select Extend Volume.

Step 3. To extend the volume of the C drive, follow these steps: Click Next until you reach the Finish button in the Extend Volume Wizard pop-up window. Once you click Finish, the Unallocated space will be added to the C drive.

How to Make C Drive Bigger in Windows 7/8/10 with Qiling Partition Master

To simplify the system partition resizing process, you can use the third-party Qiling partition magic software, which is recommended to make the process easier.

To get more space for the C drive from other drives without shrinking or deleting an existing partition, use the "Allocate space" feature to add space from another drive to the C drive in one click, without needing to consider how to get unallocated space.

For example, to assign more space from D drive to C drive:

Step 1. To resize the D: partition, click on the D: partition with enough free space and select "Resize/Move".

Select partition to allocate space

Drag the D: partition panel rightward or leftward into D: partition for unallocated space and click "Proceed" to confirm.

choose another drive to allocate space

Step 2. Select the target partition (C: drive) and drag the partition panel to the right to add free space from D: drive to C: drive, then click "Proceed" to start the process.

Can You Make A Bigger Disk Drive on Your Own Now?

To make the C drive bigger, there are two methods: using Windows' built-in Disk Management tool or third-party software like Qiling. While the native tool offers options to shrink or extend volumes, it has limitations, such as requiring unallocated space to be created beforehand and located on the same side as the C drive.

In contrast, the third-The party tool can borrow free space from any drive with just one click, ensuring data safety and avoiding any potential loss.
