macOS: a Brief Definition

macOS is a Unix operating system developed and marketed by Apple Inc. since 2001, serving as the primary operating system for Apple's Mac computers.

The macOS, previously known as Mac OS, was first introduced in 1984 to run Macintosh personal computers. Over nearly 40 years, the operating system has evolved, with the latest version, Ventura, announced in 2022.

The Mac operating system is well-known for its user-friendly graphical interface, which was so influential that it even inspired Microsoft to adopt similar interfaces for their Windows operating systems. Macs are designed specifically for the hardware they run on and come with a range of beautifully designed apps, making them unique and not easily replicable on other computers.

macOS vs. Mac OS X

Mac OS X was launched on March 24, 2001, with "X" representing the Roman numeral 10. The correct pronunciation is "ten", not the letter "X". Each version was named after a great cat, such as Cheetah, Puma, and Tiger, while internally using wine names like Merlot and Chardonnay.

In 2012, the operating system was renamed from Mac OS X to OS X, and in 2013, the name was changed again to macOS, with the name of each version being a location in California. The Mountain Lion was the last version with a cat-themed name, with subsequent releases featuring place names.

Over two decades, Mac OS X has undergone significant evolution, transforming from a slow and limited operating system in its first edition to the robust and feature-rich macOS we know today. Despite initial issues with speed and compatibility with essential apps like Microsoft Word, subsequent iterations and design updates have addressed these problems, resulting in a user-friendly and powerful operating system that has become synonymous with Apple's brand.

macOS: What Is the Latest Version

The latest version of macOS is macOS 13 Ventura, which is set to release on October 24, 2022.

macOS Ventura

macOS Monterey, the 12th major release of the Mac operating system, was named after a California city well-known for its beaches, surfers, and windsurfers. It added a new Stage Manager windowing system and changed System Preferences to System Settings.

The Stage Manager feature in macOS Ventura automatically organizes open files and applications by placing the main window in the center of the screen and displaying small icons for other open files and apps on the left side. If you're interested in trying out these new features, you can download macOS Ventura, but be sure to use Time Machine Backup to back up your data before upgrading your Mac computer.

Additional new features include:

Besides the latest version, the following three are the most frequently used and of massive support.

macOS 12 Monterey

macOS Monterey

macOS Monterey was announced during the 2021 Worldwide Developers Conference, with its features focusing on social communication and privacy. The operating system includes SharePlay, which allows up to 32 people to watch the same media simultaneously through FaceTime, enabling time synchronization and playback controls for all participants.

The WWDC keynote featured a demo of Universal Control, a feature that allows users to connect multiple Macs and iPads, and use a single mouse and keyboard to control all devices wirelessly, essentially meshing multiple computers into one.

macOS 11 Big Sur

macOS Big Sur

macOS 11 Big Sur, named for the mountainous region in central California, is the 17th major release of the Mac operating system.

macOS Big Sur, which marked the milestone of macOS 11, introduced a significant change by transitioning to Apple Silicon as its processor, replacing Intel.

New features include:

macOS 10.15 Catalina

macOS Catalina

macOS 10.15 Catalina was announced in June 2019 and represents the 16th major release of the Mac operating system, named after the island of California.

Catalina has made some notable changes, including removing the widget app Dashboard and adding new features. Notably, Sidecar allows iPads to be used as a second screen through AirDisplay or AirParrot, while also splitting iTunes into three separate sections: Music, Podcasts, and Apple TV. The Finder has also been updated to manage iOS devices connected to Mac, and the Find My feature now combines Find My Mac and Find My Friends.

Conclusions

macOS, developed by Apple, has undergone significant changes and innovations over the years, evolving from Mac OS X to macOS. The latest version, Ventura, was released last year. Each iteration, from Cheetah to Ventura, has introduced new functions or features, shaping the operating system into what it is today. This transformation can be understood through the four distinct parts of its development.
