A portable SSD with a full Windows installation turns any PC into your own workspace. Plug it in, boot from USB, and the desktop, applications, and files arrive intact.
This guide explains what an external boot drive needs, how to clone Windows 11 to it with Qiling Disk Master, and how to make the PC start from USB instead of the internal disk.
The clone is a real Windows installation, not a repair tool, so updates, drivers, and licences behave as they do on internal storage.
If the drive stays invisible, work through NVMe SSD Not Detected in a USB Enclosure before you retry the clone.

These steps take a few minutes and remove most of the reasons an external clone fails to boot.

Qiling Disk Master clones a whole disk, including the EFI and recovery partitions that Windows 11 needs to start. Download and install it first.
Step 1. Connect the external SSD and open Qiling Disk Master, then choose Clone and Disk Clone.

Step 2. Select the internal Windows disk as the source and click Next.

Step 3. Select the external SSD as the destination and confirm the warning.

Step 4. Preview the layout, adjust the partitions if needed, and tick Optimize for SSD so the portable drive starts on aligned offsets.

Step 5. Click Proceed, keep the cable connected until the progress bar completes, then shut down the PC before you change the boot order.

A clean first boot on another PC is the same test described in Windows 11 SSD Clone Without Reinstall.
Usually yes on the original PC. A very different machine may ask for reactivation because the licence is tied to the motherboard.
On most PCs that support USB boot, but some locked-down work machines block external boot in firmware.
Yes. It is a normal Windows installation, so Windows Update works while it is running from USB.
No. Flash drives are slow and wear quickly under Windows writes, so use an SSD in an enclosure.
Remove the external drive or select the internal disk in the boot menu; the internal installation is unchanged.
Before changing drives or partitions, create a full Windows backup. Qiling Disk Master creates a system image you can restore from.
Step 1. Open Qiling Disk Master and select System Backup to include Windows and the boot partitions.

Step 2. Save the image to a drive other than the system disk and start the backup.

Step 3. Click Proceed to start the system backup and wait patiently until it finishes. You can also tick Shut down the computer when the operation is completed to power off automatically.

Step 4. If the external clone refuses to boot, restore the image and start again with a fresh target.

An external SSD is the cheapest way to carry a complete Windows 11 desktop. Use an SSD in a USB 3.2 enclosure, suspend BitLocker, and clone the whole system disk with Qiling Disk Master while SSD alignment is enabled. Then select the USB entry in the one-time boot menu and let Windows install drivers for the new hardware. Keep the internal disk untouched until the portable copy boots reliably, and take a system image so the original installation can always be restored.
